TS7N: Discorvering Ham Radio
By Achraf, 3V4-002, MDXC #235

In November 2003, a muti-national DXPedition took place in the wonderful islands of Kerkannah (AF-073).
At that time, I was a begineer in the world of SWLing and Ham Radio. I had a receiver, and I was somtimes active from the radio club station located in Sfax city, 3V8SF.

I was invited by Mustapha DL1BDF, to be present in the DXPedition.
The groupe members were DL9USA, DF9QV, DJ9CB, PA0R, DK1BT, DJ7IK, DL1BDF, HB9AHL, HB9AUZ, HB9DTE, DL2EAD, DF2SS, DL5CW, JH4RHF and 3 YLs; Ruth, IT9ESZ, Evelyne, F5RPB and Ingrid, DL4BO. Some tunisian operators were also present; Bilel, Mohammed & Ahmad 3V8SF, Midou 3V8SQ, Halim 3V8SS...

TS7N Team

I was present in Kerkannah Islands from 21 to 24 of November, because I was very busy with my exams.
It was a very nice opportunity for me to meet radio amateurs from all over the world, and to learn skills and ham spirit from them.
It was also an opportunity to know more about antennas, tranceivers, amplifiers.. which I see only in the internet.
I dicovered the SpiderBeam, the V160, and I was very excited with the 4 Elt Square Vertical for 80m.

I was also impressed with the digital modes, and especially PSK31, which I loved very much.

SpiderBeam Antenna

Mustapha DL1BDF, gave me the opportunity to touch in the mic, and to make a pile up. I was working with about 1.5kW, hihi!
The antenna was the spider beam. Many many stations were calling me, and I was a little bit affraid.

When I returned back to Sfax city, I was tracking the DXPedition in all bands, all modes, using my RadioShack DX-398 Receiver, and a simple Dipole antenna for 20m (Listen).
I was also tracking them during the CQWW CW Contest.

And now, thanks to Andy DL9USA, I have 2 nice QSLs from TS7N, on 10, 17 and 20m.

I will never forget TS7N, the DXPedition, the team, the working conditions... It's my first step to amateur radio... Since that time, tracking DXPeditions, became the most enjoyble thing in my hobby.
