| WPX RTTY CONTEST 2009 - RESULTS |
| |
The 2009 edition of the WPX RTTY Contest did not show in the original rules the SWL Section. A real pity because this Contest, the only Contest by CQ Magazine with an SWL Section, has been for several years the most important RTTY Contest for SWLs.
Thanks to Ed W0YK, CQ RTTY Contest Director, which quickly backed up my offer to lead the SWL log checking and to our great friend Marek SP7DQR which provided in very short time a log check software for the SWL logs, also this year this Contest had the SWL Section.
The participation has been at the same level of the 2007 and 2008 editions, with seven logs received from six countries.

Congratulations to Stefano I3-2782/VE, which won for the first time this Contest with a considerable score. Second place for Josef OK1-11861 which already won the 2007 edition and third place for Vladimir UA0-103-16 which got the same place of the past edition. A welcome to the new entries Bill W1-7897, well known winner of several ISWL Contests and to Roland ADXB OE-527, both with good scores. And finally, very appreciated the participation of two Spanish SWLs, Fran EA30 and Antonio EA3248URE, from a country which does not seem to love very much the SWL activity.

CHECKING THE LOGS |
| |
The log check software allows to count as valid the QSOs not covered by logs sent to the Contest Manager. In this Contest the percentage of these QSOs has been very low (2.5 to 6.9%) and I decided to count them as valid QSOs for the official results. Anyway also without these QSOs the placements should not change.
For this Contest I found that the Ham logs were of good quality, thanks also to the good work of Ed W0YK which, I do think, corrected a number of logs before sending them for the cross-checking . A nice surprise for me, used to do with the poor quality of the Ham logs for the IOTA Contest.
By the SWL side the logs have been of good quality. The more correct SWLs are shown in the following table.

These scores do not provide awards, but, of course, a more correct log means more points. And actually provided for someones a better place in the results.

UBN REPORTS |
| |
Marek did a great work also for this aspect of Contest checking. Unfortunately, the time available has been very short, and I have only a beta version of the software which generates the UBN report. Anyway, also if not complete, it covers all the log errors and I will be glad to send this report to everyone will ask for.

FINAL NOTES |
| |
Several participants wrote me that the Contest robot did not accept their logs. As pointed out in my notes on this Contest in the mdxc/swl pages, the only solution was to send directly the log to the CQ RTTY Contest Director, Ed W0YK. And I answered to use this way. The problem relates to the fact that it does not exist today an official Cabrillo format for SWLs and most robots accept only the official Cabrillo for Hams with an appendix for SWLs including the station being worked. Waiting for an official Cabrillo for SWLs, the format used by SWL_DQR_Log and by the SWL Cabrillo exported by MixW is unofficial, but for sure this format does not include useless informations and is much more appropriate to SWLs.
I saw from the logs received that only two participants used a logging software able to decode RTTY as well as to export to SWL Cabrillo. It is a pity because this means, I do think, to spend a lot of time for retyping the log. I have been asked by one participant to help him with MixW 2.18, a logging program which decodes RTTY and export to SWL Cabrillo. I have been happy to help him and I will be happy to help everyone who will ask for my help. As a suggestion, an alternate to MixW 2.18 (which is a wonderful program, but not free) could be HRD/DM780, a logging program which already decodes digital modes, especially if Simon HB9DRV will add, as promised, a "do it yourself" template to generate all Cabrillo formats.
See you in the next WPX RTTY Contest 2010.
Dan Rolla, I1-12387
